Apaprently I'm Biggoted Against Indies

Waiting for Half Life 2 & Team Fortress to finish downloading, so I have time for another post. Unusual, right? Consider this makeup work for the other day. Well, I've spent most of the evening crawling through a year's worth of backlogged CMJs that were collecting dust next to my desk and I was struck by a couple of things.

When the hell did the Shins become the biggest thing in "Indie" music? I can't count the number of times I heard knock-offs. Coming in a close second is the Killers. One band pretty much ripped the guitar sound off to the letter.

Also, since I'm thinking about it, if you're being published in CMJ, it's time to stop calling yourself Indie. You're on a recognized label at this point, you're being distributed in a nationwide magazine. You're getting pretty regular radio play, even if it's not from Clear Channel. Hell, if you're part of a Scene anywhere, you're probably not Indie.

Aw, to hell with it. I'm about to forfeit my indie cred forever. I do not like The Arcade Fire. Or Bright Eyes. Or the Flaming Lips. Just don't like them. Not even a little. And yes, I've given each of these bands several chances. The romance is dead. If you need to find me, I'll be listening to Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance.

And for the curious, my MP3 collection is on random and the Backstreet Boys just popped in. How awesome am I? I'm bringing 1998 back!
