Solder Samurai

To quote Leonardo Leonardo, "that was a fun day." I wouldn't have seen that coming, either. First day of a new class, 8 hours in school, and I nearly enjoyed every minute of it. The class is called audiotronics, and it's basically a wiring and soldering class. Which is pretty fun, when you get to play with wiring in lab. I suck at soldering, but I managed to finish today's assignment, which was to put together a microphone cable from components. I barely even burned myself on the iron, which is something I'm rather proud of.

Making stuff aside, the class looks to be pretty interesting. At least insofar as it's an extension of a course I took in high school about this sort of stuff. I'm hoping that at some point they'll let us disassemble some high-tech gear. Compressors or something like that. Probably not, but a guy can dream.

I've been feeling really nostalgic lately towards the bands I used to jam with. Since I left Maryland, I haven't had a single meaningful musical encounter, and this is perhaps the most depressing facet of my post-college life. I had hoped that being in a recording school would afford me plenty of opportunities to meet other musicians, but I have yet to meet anyone that really had their act together. One of these days, I need to start hitting the local open mics. When I don't have class until 9 pm and homework due. That should happen in about 7 months.

In considering the list of places I could end up when I'm done here, I've come to the following conclusions: Austin, Seattle, New York or Boston. It's just dawning on me how awesome Seattle would be, excepting the fact that I don't really know anyone farther west than Arizona. But living close to Vancouver would be a huge plus, not to mention being in a cooler climate after these hot, hot, hot years in the south. If anyone has any other recommendations, I'd love to hear them. Convince me to move to a city where I already know people, that would be ideal.

Anyway, time to order a pizza and veg out for a bit. Next stop, awesome time.
